Internet is a nice medium to connect with the entire World. People use it as a medium to connect with other people, sharing files, entertainment, information and lots of other activities that are useful and beneficial in many terms. While browsing internet I found many websites which are useful in many ways. Some of them are Google, Facebook, NYTimes, Reditt etc. Here I am mentioning top 10 reasons why people use internet.
Information
People browse internet for information. They love to browse various search engines like Google, Yahoo to know about any necessary information. Also people love browsing websites like Wikipedia which is a complete encyclopedia on internet.
Social networking
Social networking is an essential medium to communicate with friend and family members. There are lots of social networking websites like Facebook, Orkut, and Bebo which is heavily consumed by users for connecting with friends.
Communication
Communication is another way to use internet. People connect via each other through various IM services likeGtalk, Skype, and Yahoo messenger. There are lots of other services through which people send messages.
Transfer of files
From office to schools, from business person to college students everyone send files through internet. This is an essential part of their life. These file are send through internet. People use various mail services like Gmail,Yahoomail, AOL, and Hotmail etc to send files.
Current buzz
It’s either latest news or Football match score, people love to surf internet to get a live update of any news. Websites like Rediff, NYTimes, Gawker are a quick news providing websites.
Entertainment
There is a very close relation of internet to entertainment. It’s watching videos in YouTube, playing live games, or downloading movies; internet proves its domination everywhere.
Internet Transactions
Now internet can save time and money of people. The facility is known as internet banking facility through which people can deposit any bill, transfer money through accounts, and make internet reservations on time from their home.
Making money
People can make money online by using internet. People can make money online by many factual ways. There are lots of options available. Designing, Freelancing, consultancies, software providers, application always help people to work in an easier way.
Marketing
Internet marketers use internet to sell products. There are lots of social media enthusiasts who promote other’s product online via various social media sites. There are lots of publishers available who promote others product by advertising on various websites blogs etc.
Online education
Online education is very famous medium of study in developed countries and growing in developing nations. Various websites such as Khan Academy and FreeVideoLectures offer online courses to learn various things like designing, programming, engineering, medical, finance and other subjects. This is very helpful medium to promote education on that place where courses are not available easily.

Nice generic list of the 10 activities on the internet. Although, some of the topics are quite widespread, and some are sub categories of the other.
As is the case of communication and social networking. Both tend to belong to a bigger family. Email is integrated in Facebook, and Blogging and Tweeting and Tumblring etc, the bigger difference between them is a blurry line.
One important thing which I find missing here is the use of torrent, or P2p. Of course, you have mentioned Transfer of files via email. But torrent is the biggest means of transferring data over the internet. And it is used everyday by billions across the world to download music, movies, porn, games, ebooks and all sorts.
But I am glad that you did mention Transactions, Marketing, and Online education. All in all a good list.

Nice point you catch Sujoy, while writing the article it was came in my mind to mention Torrent also but I though it would better to mention downloading movies in place of Torrent. Downloading movie include all the stream of download movies, either from Torrent or P2P sharing. Thanks for adding value here.

Sure, a good list. When I go through all these points I found some similarities and some basic reasons why internet is so much used. The most basic reason I think, is people just want everything to be done in minimum time. Internet just saves a lot of time in a smart way for everything you have written above.
Second the cost behind using these all facilities are pretty much lower than without net.
Third, fourth, fifth and so more but the basic things are always same, we want everything easily and in smarty way, what internet had always done.

I would also add to solve problems. When I have a computer or other problem with tech. The web more importantly (YouTube) is the first place I look. Seems like there is a video tutorial on just about anything you might need to know.
When i was introduced to internet, making money was the Only thing i knew about internet. and then Things started Changing, and Now Internet is Mine
