All your points mentioned are valid and important for any website. I do my best to reply to all comments and am very strict on comments being left. Some users will have 2-5 words in their comment and you can definitely not reply to that.

I try to write something personal now and then, give others an idea of me in general. Polls are great and can used to collect important information that can be used later in a post.

Controversies are sometimes best methods to get comments. Some time ago, I wrote a negative review of a website and many fans commented on it.
Also, it is good idea to reveal something that most people don’t about a product or service. For example, in my latest post, I listed some shortcomings of Thesis theme which most of the affiliates don’t tell and it got great response!
Replying to comments(and having a notifying plugin enabled) and polls are also good methods that have worked for me.

Regarding Popular post widget I want to tell the best solution: Use Google Analytics service to analyze the most search hit content and add those post manually as featured content in RHS and add this list regularly. This is the most efficient method to show most popular post on Blogger platform.

Ofcourse Commenting is an important part of blogging and I like the way you are interacting with your readers by sending IM to them. That’s a good point which shows how much you care about your readers.
And, Still I am using blogspot and tried popular post widget on my blog many times but removed it bcoz popular post was not working correctly on my blogspot blog. I think popular posts widget for blogger works same as random posts widget. Do you know about any widget which works on blogspot?
