Spice Retail today announced the first Firefox OS running smartphone for the Indian market. The device is called Spice Fire One Mi – FX 1 and will be available for a miserly price of Rs 2299. This makes the Firefox device, one of the most affordable smartphones going around and does not have all too shabby specifications too at the price being offered. The question of ecosystem being very nascent is a concern but you do get most of the important social networking apps such as Facebook and Twitter right out of the box. There is also a marketplace in the phone to allow you to download applications for your Firefox smartphone.
On the specifications front, there is little information about the RAM and the battery capacity of the device, but you do get a rather small 3.5 inch HVGA display with 1 GHz processor and 2 MP rear camera. The phone only has 2G support, and there is support for dual SIM. You do have other regular connectivity options such as Wifi and Bluetooth. Unfortunately, nothing is known about the storage capacity of the device.
The Firefox device definitely is targeted to those who are looking to buy a feature phone and therefore are not willing to spend more than about 2.5K in Indian Currency. The phone then becomes an attractive smartphone offering to them, as long as they can get past the rather bare ecosystem currently. The phone will go on sale on snapdeal.com, starting August 29th. Spice, to their credit do plan a larger rollout of the phone after launching it, especially in the bigger offline stores.
