We are living and breathing the IM revolution today and the likes of WhatsApp and Skype have been at the heart of this. While WhatsApp revolutionised the way we connect and text our friends, Skype has been pretty much the go to service in case you want to combine IM and Voice calling, commonly called as VOIP. While several new players have entered, the likes of Google Hangouts, Hike, Line, Telegram etc, none of them have been able to displace WhatsApp and the likes from the pole position.
Reliance is going to be attempting to do just same as it prepares to bring in a social IM hub with its Reliance Jio ISP service. The application will be a part of bundled package that you would get when you subscribe to the service. The service will be launched with the 4G LTE data plan in 2015, and would work with any carrier. It is not clear whether the application will be listed on Google Play as a free download or Reliance would be using a third party hosting destination. We are also not sure about whether the application will be cross platform or Android specific.
Based on the screenshots, posted by Telecom talk the service will bring not just IM but also video calling and the ability to send across 100 free text messages to a users every month. You can also send files, stickers, images, business cards as well as doodles, a bit like Hike and the rest. The application has been designed for India from the ground up and is currently in testing phase. Users will have to sign up using their mobile numbers, post which a verification is made. In all honesty, we do not see the space for yet another IM player in the market, though it would be interesting what differentiation can the Jio Social service offer.
