Gionee India made a major announcement around the new year period that they will be starting to manufacture their devices in India. While the news was greeted with a lot of enthusiasm and excitement, there were question marks over how Gionee would be doing the same and around when. Today morning, via a PR note, the company has announced a partnership with Foxconn and Dixon technologies to start their manufacturing initiative in India. The manufacturing unit of Foxconn is in Andhra Pradesh while that of Dixon is based out of Delhi-NCR.
Arvind Vohra, the Country CEO and MD of Gionee India remarked:
Make in India as an initiative gives an opportunity to not only take Gionee as brand ahead but also to be actively able to participate in the growth of our economy through various touch points. We are happy to have partnered with the best in business including Foxconn and Dixon and sure that this step will prove to be instrumental in the brands future.
The release mentions that the manufacturing in the plants will start in October. As for which devices will be manufactured where, the F and P series will be manufactured out of the Foxconn unit while several other featurephones and smartphones will be manufactured by Dixon. There is no mention of the E and S series devices in the release, so we are assuming that they will continue to be manufactured in China and imported to India. Since a large set of Gionee lineup is to be manufactured in India now, you can expect the pricing from the company to be even more aggressive given that there would be no import duty to pay for bringing it in. Gionee has followed the likes of Samsung and Xiaomi among others in the Make in India initiative.
