Almost three months after releasing the device in a major festival like setting in Goa, the Chinese smartphone manufacturer, Gionee, has released the update to Android 4.4 KitKat for the world’s slimmest phone. The Gionee Elife S5.5 was released with Android 4.2.2 out of the box and has finally been updated to the latest version of Android OS. GIonee confirmed that the update is rolling out OTA through their social media profile.
The update takes S5.5 directly to Android 4.4.2 and skips the Android 4.3 update. Some of the new features added sees a minor UI overhaul with some KitKat goodness such as change in the menu bar icons. The update is almost an 800 MB file, so you must be prepared to be patient unless you are on an absurdly fast internet connection. More than anything else we hope the update would enhance the battery performances as well as the heating issues which have plagued the device. There are a couple of new apps that Gionee has added with the KitKat update and there are minor tweaks in the notification bar too. Color scheme too on the device has been changed to a more subtle gray menu layout as compared to a thick orange and white combination. The fonts are noticeably thinner too and the color saturation has been amped just a little bit.
There is no word on the update to the previous flagship that is the Elife E7, which is surprising, given that the device runs on Snapdragon 800 chipset. Other devices such as the LG G2 which are on the same chipset have already received the KitKat update.
