Google Hangouts is gradually outwitting Skype as the preferred IM/ Voice/ Video call service for personal and business purposes. Hangouts recently received a major redesign to the Material Design guidelines for Android and if that was not enough, Google is making the move to Hangouts even more attractive by offering the first minute of any call to 25 selected countries for free.
The 25 countries that are included are:
Canada: Most calls will be free. A few destinations will cost USD 1 cent per minute after the first minute.
United States: Most calls will be free. A few destinations will cost USD 1 cent per minute after the first minute.
This means that whenever you will make an international call to the selected 25 countries, your first minute will not be chargeable and if you hang up, any time before the 60 second counter, the call will be free. This offer though is available only till the turn of the year and beyond that normal rates will apply. Whenever you attempt a call to these 25 countries, you will be notified of the scheme via a popup so that you can be absolutely sure. It would be available across all the platforms that Hangouts work with, including iOS, Android and desktop.
Google has also included a use and abuse clause in the agreement, so it will detect in case you keep disconnecting before 60 seconds and redialing to make effectively a long call, so be careful of that.
