How To Configure And Use Xmarks in Google Chrome Broswer

Xmarks is one of the best bookmarks and password sync tool. Recently the owners of the service announced the closure of this service but due to heavy fans support, Xmarks decided to continue its service. This service is present in the form of browser extension and available for all the major browsers such as Firefox, Chrome and Safari & Internet Explorer.

It means you can synchronize bookmarks and password data between these browser using this extension. This is a step by step guide to use the extension in Google Chrome. Using Xmarks in Firefox and Safari is almost similar.

Go to Chrome Extension Gallery and download and install the extension.


On the top right of your browser, a small Xmarks icon will appear. Click on the icon to start setting up your account.


A small browser window will pop up asking you to proceed to the setup. Click Next.


If you don’t have Xmarks account, you need to sign up for the service. Select No option and click Next. Otherwise select Yes: Log me in and proceed to the next step.


Select your username, email and password and click Next. In the next step it’ll ask you to enable secure password sync. But in this article we consider that you already have Xmarks account and want to setup it in Google Chrome. So we proceed to the login step.


You need to login with your username and password. After enter your login ID and password, proceed to the Next step.


You can synchronize your bookmarks by clicking the “Sync” button. However, you can change the Sync setting by clicking the “Change Sync settings” button.


You’ll get four options to change the sync settings. Select the desired setting and click OK. If your browser already have some bookmarks then Xmarks will merge it with the bookmarks present in the Xmarks server.


Xmarks will start synchronizing your bookmarks. You can see it in a progress bar.


After completing the process, it will display a notification. Click OK.


How to Sync Password Using Xmarks in Chrome

So far we’ve covered password bookmark sync only. Syncing password is not included in the initial steps because of security concerns. However, you can anytime synchronize your saved passwords. Here’s the method to do that.

Click on the Xmarks icon on the extension bar and select “Xmarks Settings”


On Xmarks settings page, click on the Sync tab. Check the box next to password.


It will ask your PIN to access the Xmarks password. Enter the secret PIN you created while setup your account and press “Confirm” button.


It will enable the password Sync. One thing you should note that Xmarks has nothing to do with Chrome’s inbuilt password manager. It means if you download all the passwords saved inside Xmarks server then it won’t affect the stored password in Chrome.

Password sync is enable and now you need to download all the passwords into your computer so that you can see it through password manager. Click on the “Password Manager” button.


In the “Saved Passwords” tab, click on “Verify PIN” button.


Enter your secret PIN and click the “Confirm” button.


Click on the “Download” button.


Xmarks will start synchronizing your passwords.

Once completed it will notify you. Click the OK button.


That’s it. Your all the passwords have been are downloaded locally on your computer. You can check all of them by visiting the Xmarks password manager.

Note: To see all the password, every time you need to provide secret PIN. It will be lot better than the Chrome’s inbuilt password manager in which any user can see all the saved password without entering any code.

Suppose you saved the password of your Facebook account in Xmarks, so next time when you visit the website, you don’t need to enter your username and password, Xmarks will automatically fill it for you. Great feature. If you login into any web service whose password is not saved inside Xmarks server, then you’ll get a notification a the top of your browser to save the password in Xmarks account.
