Recently we told you about various screens used in the mobile industry today. From OLED to Super AMOLED HD, we covered everything. However, we all agree that iPhone is probably the most famous smart phone out in the market and loads of people wanted us to go deeper into comparing the display on the newer iPhones to the older ones, given that the 3Gs version of the phone is very cheaply available. So this is what you shall miss out in terms of screen.
There have always been controversies regarding the capability of the retina display on a 12 inch screen, with some amount of tech controversy around the idea that the eye can’t discern its pixels at 12 inches. I guess that doesn’t really matter in the end; what does matter is whether or not the screen looks better than previous ones.
One of the biggest features of the iPhone 4 and the 4S is the screen used which is termed as Retina Display. The retina display in the new iphone 4 and 4S has four times the amount of pixels compared to the older iPhone models (3GS and 3G). Apple has made the scene in such a way that it claims that not even a single pixel will be visible on the screen when viewed from the normal viewing distance (25cms.)
There have been a few complaints about Apple’s claim but i guess the picture above says it all. This screen is the finest, most vibrant and a high resolution screen ever. It actually glows. It actually has a very large pixel display depth that the naked eye isn’t able to distinguish between pixels. By developing pixels about 78 micrometers wide, the Apple engineers were able to pack four times the number of pixels into the 3.5-inch (diagonal) screen found on iPhone 4S and iPhone 4. The resulting pixel density now became 326 pixels per inch which makes text and graphics look smooth and continuous at any size. The retina display uses the technology called IPS or in plane switching which means that the iphone can be held in any position but still the picture on the screen will look the same. It offers 4 times the contrast ratio 800:1 as compared to 3GS and thus the white becomes brighter and the black becomes darker thus making everything vibrant and mesmerising. Talking about the material, the screen is made with the material similar to the one used in making helicopter glasses. It is treated chemically to be more durable and more scratch free. It also has been coated with an oil resistant material which does not allow oil to stay on the screen. Overall the apple team has brought about a revolution and looking at this many other companies have launched phones with high resolution screens but i guess apple outruns then all. Above is a picture which compares the iPhone 3GS screen and the iphone 4 and 4S screen.
What are your thoughts? Has Apple created an impressive screen? Please tell us more if you know we would love to hear from you
