Keeping in line with the tradition established over the last couple of years of bringing out a ‘mini’ variant of their flagship device, Samsung has announced the Galaxy S5 Mini today. The device as expected is completely based on the aesthetics of the Galaxy S5 and brings a lot of features of the same, though in a tighter and a more compact form factor.
The first major difference is that the S5 Mini, has a smaller 4.5 inch display and is powered by a slower QuadCore 1.4 GHz chip with 1.5 GB of RAM on board. The rear camera is an 8 MP shooter which is smaller than the 16 MP sensor we have seen on the S5. However, the S5 mini is an IP 67 certified device which means for all practical purposes it is water and dustproof. The S5 mini is also equipped with features like the Ultra Power Saver mode as well as the fingerprint scanner and heart rate monitor like the original S5. The battery on the device has been stripped down to 2100 mAh, though the internal memory of the phone is the same 16 GB with an option to expand via a micro SD card.
S5 Mini will go on sale starting early July in Russia first and will be followed by a global launch. The device will ship in the major four colors of white, black, golden and blue like the S5 was. No announcement regarding the pricing or the dates of the availability of the device were made.
